I remember late one night

How the stars ancient light

Seemed to reach right down from the sky

Wonder finds us where it will

Stay open and be still

And trust what's in front of your eyes

Tomorrow's sun is bound to rise and set

On the promises we haven't broken yet

We'll do all of that and more

That's what growing older is for

Pick your battles, lose your wars

And forgive what's left

I remember being alone

Wondering how I'd make it home

Breaking bottles on the stones in my path

It was all so long ago, all the trouble and the woe

Yet I'm still cleaning up broken glass

We're all just cosmic dust from outer space

And we'll be gone one day without a trace

But in between we may divine

In the fullness of time

The fine line between a gift and a mistake

I'll remember the saving graces

And those old super 8s

Where we raced like sparks down the sand

The bargain life insists upon

From you and me, we just get one

It's always been out of our hands

But after life's big acts and its interludes

Are quiet mornings of coffee and gratitude

And a coda without words

And the poetry of birds

And the wild and brave and shining hearts
