Numbered Days

It's butterflies and smoke-filled cars

Her big blue eyes staring deep down past my heart

It's rain and wind blowing through the willow tree

But that beauty's nothing when she's standing next to me

It's skating fast in parking lots

Her hair falls back exposing her to the sun

It's watching the sunset behind these old streets

But those colors may as well be grey when she's standing next to me

And I know our days are numbered

But still she wants to take it slow

And I see that she'll never know what this time has meant for me

And I hope that California takes her by the hand

And leads her to her next road

It's hazy rooms watching the TV

But I can't focus on the show if she's sitting next to me

I watch her lips move so I know she's saying things

But I can't focus on her words when her hand brushes me

It's walking out to my car

It's feeling red while we know her roommates watch from afar

The stars shine brightly

She looks up to see

But I can't see a single star when she's standing next to me

And I know our days are numbered

But still she wants to take it slow

And I see that she'll never know the questions she's left with me

And I hope that California tells her everything she wants to know

Time moves slowly

Eyes catch, grounds me

Time moves faster

Legs touch, ask her

Time passed, drive home

First moves, postponed

And I see that certainties in life are never guaranteed

And I hope that California gives her life meaning and tells her where next to go
