Lyrics
For years on end it was the men
Who voted for men who chose the men
Who passed the laws in parliament for all to obey
And though it’s hard to comprehend
It was the case at Number 10 that
Only men could make a vote and have their say.
But what of the mothers who raised the men?
And what of the sisters of the men?
And their daughters, not to mention all their wives?
Was it right that all of them
Should be expected to depend
On just the men to make decisions for their lives?
When you know that something isn’t right
Then you must stand up and join the fight
If you want to have a voice
You simply haven’t got a choice
Never give up, never give in, never surrender!
(Repeat, children singing “Glory Glory Alleluia” at the same time)
Across the nations, far and wide,
“Votes for Women!”, people cried,
And in their efforts to be noticed broke the law.
But in response to this the men
Said “if we let them vote, what then?
Next they’ll want to be P.M. and so much more!”
And so the leader of their campaign
(Emmeline Pankhurst was her name)
Inspired the women to persevere till they were heard
They were imprisoned and in pain
Their pleas ignored again and again
Until the press were told to silence every word
When you know that something isn’t right
Then you must stand up and join the fight
If you want to have a voice
You simply haven’t got a choice
Never give up, never give in, never surrender!
(Repeat, children singing “Glory Glory Alleluia” at the same time)
In desperation and in fear
They made arrangements to appear
At Epsom Derby where they knew the King would be
As the horses thundered round
A woman pushed right through the crowd
And walked out onto the track for all to see.
Emily Davison gave her life
So every daughter, every wife
And every sister has a chance to change the laws.
But at what a dreadful cost
That for such changes lives are lost
When will we learn from our mistakes and end the wars?
When you know that something isn’t right
Then you must stand up and join the fight
If you want to have a voice
You simply haven’t got a choice
Never give up, never give in, never surrender!
(Repeat, children singing “Glory Glory Alleluia” at the same time)
