It was in the early part of winter...that's when I first remember.
When I beheld them angels...out there in the barn.
I saw a bright light above me as my family slept not far away.
I saw the stars moving, they looked targets
in a shooting arcade in Paris!
Just like targets in a shooting arcade in Paris!
Then suddenly them angels, they removed me from my body
and I flew high above this world.
I saw the lights of distant cities
I saw miracles and wonders, and I didn't mind that I was leaving
this farm where I grew up.
No, I didn't mind one little bit to leave
this farm where I grew up!
Cause I had me a time with them angels!
A mighty fine time with them angels!
I laughed so hard with them angels...
that I...never wanted...to come home.
Since papa abandoned our family,
for these three long years we've struggled.
And as I worked the farm each day, I'd wonder why them angels
would not help me with my mother, or ease my sister's suffering.
So in the barn that night I told them,
how I wish we could all just grow wings
and fly away up into heaven!
Why can't we all just grow wings
and fly away up into heaven??
And that's when the angels whispered to me
that they were answering my prayers.
So they flew into the house as I watched from the barn
and then everything went swimmy,
as I felt the weight of the world
just lifting off of my shoulders
that weight, it just lifted off of my shoulders....
Then I had me a time with them angels!
A mighty fine time with them angels!
I laughed so hard with them angels...
that I...never wanted...to come home.
Now I guess that sheriff, he don't believe me,
when I say it was them angels
that burned down our farmhouse...
while I slept out in the barn.
But now that he's released me,
well, I can go and find my father,
and I can tell him about them angels,
before I send him off to heaven.
I'll send that man right off to heaven!
And when that's done I will just walk on
toward the distant horizon...
that has always remembered the sound of my name.
Where there's a world waiting for me.
Where I can start myself a family
Where with children bouncing on my knee,
I can tell them all the story...
Of how I had me a time with them angels!
A mighty fine time with them angels!
I laughed so hard with them angels...
that I never wanted to come....home...
