I was born out under open sky
I never had a home
But for this endless prairie
Where the ancient spirits roam
Like a phantom, I elude
The rifle scope and pistol sight
Howling at the crescent moon
Rising slow tonight
Over flat land
I roam the open country
With no equal in my view
My numbers once were many
Now they are but few
It sounds like Heaven’s judgment
When my herd and I do run
No longer terrorized
By thunder from the hunter’s gun
On flat land
Oh, on flat land
I was here for generations
Long before the age of man
Before cars and planes, trucks and trains
Native to this land
I’ve seen your cities rise
I’ve seen the boom, I’ll see the bust
I will see your bones bleach in the sun
And slowly turn to dust
On flat land
Oh, on flat land
I soar upon the sacred wind
Between the earth and sky
There’s no place upon creation’s face
Safe for you to hide
When I fold my wings behind me
And I rocket to the ground
Should my talons find their mark
It’s quite a long way down
To flat land
I make my bed beneath the earth
I rise up with the sun
To warm my blood upon the stone
Until the day is done
Cursed to crawl upon the earth
I hunt my prey at night
Venom flowing through my fangs
With lighting speed, I strike
On flat land
On the flat land
I was here for generations
Long before the age of man
Before cars and planes, trucks and trains
Native to this land
I’ve seen your cities rise
I’ve seen the boom, I’ll see the bust
I will see your bones bleach in the sun
And slowly turn to dust
On flat land
On flat land
