Der 1977 in Connecticut geborene Musiker sorgte in Amerika schon mit seinem Debütalbum Room for Squares (2001) und dem Hit "Your Body Is a Wonderland" für Aufmerksamkeit. Das zweite Album Heavier Things (2003) kam prompt an die Spitze der US-Charts, nebenher spielte er mit Musikern wie Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock und John Scofield. Mit Continuum (2006) und Battle Studiies (2009) bewegte sich Mayer im Mainstream-Pop, die Folgeplatten Born and Raised (2012) und Paradise Valley (2013) setzten stärker auf Roots- und Folk-Einflüsse. Nach The Search for Everything (2017) dockte Mayer mit seinem achten Album Sob Rock (2021) an den Adult-Contemporary-Rock der Achtziger an und kam damit auch in die deutschen Top 5.
