Die Musik von John Williams ist gleichzeitig der Sound unserer Popkultur. Seine pulsierenden Melodien sind essenzieller Bestandteil der Magie amerikanischer Blockbuster, angefangen beim bedrohlichen Zweitonmotiv in „Der weiße Hai“ über den Weltall-Pomp von „Star Wars“ bis hin zu der ergreifenden Geigenmelodie, die wir in „Schindlers Liste“ hören. Der 1932 in New York geborene Williams studierte zunächst Komposition in Los Angeles, bevor er in seine Heimatstadt zurückkehrte und sich als Jazzpianist verdingte. Einen ersten Erfolg feierte er 1971 mit dem Oscar-prämierten Soundtrack für „Anatevka“: Der Score, der den epischen Stil von Erich Korngolds orchestraler Filmmusik aus den goldenen Jahren Hollywoods wiederaufleben ließ, begründete seine Karriere. In den 1970er Jahren stellte er mit zwei Kollaborationen weitere Weichen für sein Vermächtnis: Williams’ jahrzehntelange Partnerschaft mit Steven Spielberg begann mit „Sugarland“, dem Kinodebüt des Regisseurs, und umfasste unter anderem „E.T. – der Außerirdische“, „Unheimliche Begegnung Der Dritten Art“ und „Minority Report“. Die zweite wichtige Zusammenarbeit mit George Lucas mündete in der heute ikonischen Musik von „Star Wars“, deren Einfluss auf die weitere Entwicklung des Genres nicht in Worte zu fassen ist. Williams’ Motive – etwa die kühnen musikalischen Eruptionen in „Jurassic Park“ oder die heroischen Blechbläser in „Jäger des verlorenen Schatzes“ – verschmelzen die Musik untrennbar mit den Szenen, die sie begleitet. Aber es lohnt sich durchaus, auch Williams’ Arbeiten jenseits der Leinwand zu erkunden: Ein Höhepunkt ist das technisch anspruchsvolle Violinkonzert Nr. 2 (2021) geschrieben für Anne-Sophie Mutter als Solistin.
