Der Sänger\Texter/Komponist Antony wuchs in Kalifornien auf und fühlte sich als völliger Außenseiter, bis er das Bild von Boy George auf dem Cover des Debütalbums von the Culture Club aus dem Jahr 1982 sah. Nachdem er 1990 nach New York umgezogen war und dort eine Welt fand, die für seine Avantgarde-Gefühle und seine unbestimmte sexuelle Natur offener war, versuchte er, in der Musik Fuß zu fassen. Schließlich gründete er Antony and the Johnsons und veröffentlichte im Jahr 2000 auf David Tibets Durtro-Label das nach ihnen benannte Album, das von den Kritikern begeistert aufgenommen wurde.
