Willie Nelson gehört nicht nur zu den bekanntesten Country-Musikern Amerikas, sondern wurde auch zu einer Pop-Ikone. Der 1933 in Texas geborene Sänger und Gitarrist nahm ab den Sechzigern regelmäßig Platten auf und schrieb auch Hitsongs für Stars wie Ray Price oder Patsy Cline. Erst 1975 kam aber der wirkliche Durchbruch im Zuge der Outlaw-Bewegung und dem Album Red Headed Stranger. Nelson bezog verschiedene Stile wie Pop, Jazz, Honky Tonk, Rock'n'Roll, Folk und Blues in seine Musik ein, ab den Achtzigern trat er auch immer wieder als Schauspieler in Erscheinung. Mit seinen Platten beeinflusste er zahlreiche neue Countrymusiker, traditionelle wie alternative. Auch im hohen Alter bleibt Nelson aktiv und findet mit Spätwerken wie Last Man Standing (2018) oder First Rose of Spring (2020) internationale Beachtung.
