Taking Back Sunday richteten ihre Interpretation melodischen Hardcores an Bands wie Lifetime, Endpoint und Sunny Day Real Estate aus. Nach der Veröffentlichung eines Demobands mit fünf Songs und einer einjährigen Tournee, gingen Taking Back Sunday bei Victory Records unter Vertrag. Sie nahmen Tell All Your Friends (2002) auf und legten hier einen klassischen Hardcore-Sound mit Popsongelementen vor. Im Jahr 2004 erschien ihr zweites Album Where You Want to Be, das sofort auf Platz 3 der Billboard Top 200 landete. Das 2006er Album Louder Now erreichte in den Top 200 Platz 2.
