Paul Simon, dessen Karriere bis in die 50er Jahre zurückreicht, setzte sich als einer der besten und beliebtesten Songwriter der Rockära durch. Ab Mitte der 60er Jahre waren er und Art Garfunkel eine der erfolgreichsten Nummern der Popmusik. Sein Soloalbum aus dem Jahr 1975 (Still Crazy After All These Years) erreichte die Spitze der Charts, gewann den Grammy für das Album des Jahres und enthielt den Platz-1-Hit "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." Ab Mitte der 80er Jahre begann er, sich für südafrikanische Musik zu interessieren und veröffentlichte Graceland: dies war das Soloalbum, das sich am häufigsten verkaufte und ebenfalls einen Grammy für das Album des Jahres gewann. ~ William Ruhlmann
