Wynton Marsalis hat fast im Alleingang die einflussreiche neo-traditionelle Jazzbewegung der Achtziger und Neunziger eingeleitet. Zusammen mit seinem Vater Ellis und seinen Brüdern Branford, Delfeayo und Jason ist Wynton ein Mitglied einer musikalischen Dynastie aus New Orleans, die sich ihren Platz in den musikalischen Geschichtsbüchern gesichert hat. Marsalis leitet nicht nur verschiedene eigene Gruppen, sondern ist auch der musikalische Leiter des Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra und der Komponist von epischen Werken wie dem vielgelobten "Blood on the Fields" von 1997. Als bekanntester Jazzmusiker seiner Zeit wurde Marsalis zu einem Fürsprecher und damit zu einer treibenden Kraft des Genres.
