Tarja ist am besten als Sängerin der finnischen gothic/sinfonischen Metalband Nightwish bekannt. Ihr Begabung als Sopranistin bescherte ihr einen Studienplatz in Klassischem Gesang an der Sibelius Academy in Kuopio, wo ihr Kommilitone Tuomas Holopainen sie als Sängerin für sein musikalisches Projekt engagierte. So wurde Nightwish aus der Taufe gehoben. 2005 wurde Tarja (in einem "offenen Brief") aufgefordert, Nightwish zu verlassen. Die übrigen Bandmitglieder gaben finanzielle und persönliche Bedenken an. Im Anschluss daran gab es eine öffentliche Schlammschlacht à la "er hat gesagt / sie hat gesagt" und Tarja begann eine Solokarriere. Im Oktober 2007 erschien ihr erstes Soloalbum My Winter Storm, das bei Spinefarm Records erschien. ~ Chris True
