Obwohl der öffentliche Erfolg größtenteils einen Bogen um the Roots machte, setzte die Band aus Philadelphia Maßstäbe für den Live-Rap. Sie gründeten sich auf der Philosophie von Stetsasonics "Hip-Hop-Band" aus der Mitte der 80er Jahre und konzentrierten sich auf eine Live-Instrumentierung in ihren Konzerten und im Studio.
