Teodor Currentzis wurde als Dirigent unorthodoxer Operninterpretationen bekannt, vor allem seine Mozart-Aufnahmen sorgten für Aufsehen. Currentzis wurde 1974 in Athen geboren und studierte schon mit 12 am Konservatorium Violine, später Komposition. 1994 zog er nach Russland, wo er am Konservatorium in St. Petersburg unter Ilja Musin studierte. Von 2004 bis 2010 war Currentzis Chefdirigent am Nowosibirsker Staatlichen Akademischen Opern- und Balletttheater, gleichzeitig gründete er das MusicAeterna-Ensemble. Für Opernaufführungen von Bergs Wozzeck, Prokofjews Cinderella und Verdis Aida gewann er Preise. 2011 wurde er Musikdirektor des Opern- und Balletttheaters in Perm, 2018 Chefdirigent des SWR-Symphonieorchesters. Seit 2008 hat Currentzis auch mehrere Alben eingespielt, u.a. mit Aufnahmen von Mozart, Strawinsky, Mahler, Tschaikowski und Beethoven.
