Mit einem organischen Gespür für Harmonien und einer kreativen Improvisationsgabe wurde Scott Colley zu einem der gefragtesten Post-Bop-Bassisten. Er wurde 1963 in Los Angeles geboren, zu seinen Mentoren gehören Monty Budwig und Charlie Haden. Er machte sich schnell einen Namen in der Jazzszene und spielte u.a. mit Roy Hargrove, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Hancock, Chris Potter, John Scofield, Donny McCaslin, Andrew Hill, Nels Cline und Wolfgang Muthspiel. Unter eigenem Namen veröffentlichte er u.a. die Platten This Place und The Magic Line (beide 2000) mit Musikern von Potters Band. Sein Album Architect of the Silent Moment (2007) galt schnell als moderner Jazzklassiker, auch seine Platten Empire (2010) und Seven (2017) tauchten in vielen Jahresbestenlisten auf. Colley spielt auch in den Bandprojekten Still Dreaming (mit Joshua Redman) und Steel House (mit Edward Simon).
