Das New York Philharmonic gilt allgemein als das älteste Orchester der USA und ist ein echtes Schwergewicht, einerseits als innovativer Bewahrer von Traditionen, andererseits als Wegbereiter für neue Werke. Die 1842 gegründete Institution brauchte Jahrzehnte, um Stabilität zu finden, zu wahrer Größe erblühte sie unter Theodore Thomas, der 1877 sein 14-jähriges Engagement als Dirigent begann. Auf ihn folgte Anton Seidl im Jahr 1891, dem Jahr, in dem die Carnegie Hall eröffnet wurde (und die bis 1962 ihr Zuhause war). 1921 fusionierte das „Phil“ mit dem New Yorker National Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung von Chefdirigent Willem Mengelberg, und 1928 mit der New York Symphony Society. Ab 1930 stand Arturo Toscanini als alleiniger Dirigent an der Spitze des Orchesters, das nach seinem Rücktritt 1936 von einer Reihe von Gastdirigenten geleitet wurde. Mit Leonard Bernstein, 1957 zum Musikdirektor ernannt, erhielt erstmals ein gebürtiger Amerikaner diesen Posten. Bernsteins Amtszeit festigte den Ruf des Orchesters: Er startete ein ehrgeiziges Auftragsprojekt, moderierte die CBS-Fernsehserie „Young People’s Concerts“ und veranlasste den Umzug des Orchesters ins Lincoln Center. Bernsteins Nachfolger wurde 1971 Pierre Boulez, bevor Zubin Mehta und Kurt Masur die Institution ins 21. Jahrhundert führten. 2002 übernahm Lorin Maazel das Ruder, 2008 dirigierte er den historischen Auftritt des „Phil“ in Nordkorea. Ihm folgten 2009 Alan Gilbert und 2018 Jaap van Zweden, der den zukunftsorientierten Ruf der New Yorker Philharmoniker weiter stärkte.
