Mit seinem markanten Gitarrensound und seinem entspannten Gesang wurde Mark Knopfler als Frontmann der Dire Straits weltberühmt. Der 1949 in Glasgow geborene Musiker gründete die Band 1977 und konnte bald mit Songs wie "Sultans of Swing" oder "Money for Nothing" Hits landen. Nebenbei wurde Knopfler auch als Filmkomponist tätig (Local Hero, Cal, Die Braut des Prinzen), produzierte und spielte mit Bob Dylan, Randy Newman und Willy DeVille und schrieb Songs für andere Musiker, darunter "Private Dancer" für Tina Turner. Außerdem nahm er ein Album mit Chet Atkins auf und eins mit seinem Country-Seitenprojekt The Notting Hillbillies. 1996, nach Auflösung der Dire Straits, startete er mit Golden Heart eine Solokarriere. Es folgten erfolgreiche Alben wie Sailing to Philadelphia (2000), Shangri-La (2004), Privateering (2012), Tracker (2015) und Down the Road Wherever (2018); mit Emmylou Harris spielte er die Platte All the Roadrunning (2006) ein. 2024 erschien sein zehntes Soloalbum One Deep River.
