Einfachste Bluesakkorde mit der elektrisch verstärkten Gitarre, eine dunkle Stimme, der rhythmisch tappende Fuss: Mit seinen ebenso minimalistischen wie zeitlosen Boogies wurde John Lee Hooker zum Superstar des Blues, Bands wie die Animals oder die Doors waren glühende Verehrer seiner Musik. Bekannt wurde Hooker mit einflussreichen Singles wie "Boogie Chillen'" (1948), "Crawling King Snake" (1949), "Dimples" (1956) und "Boom Boom" (1962), in den Fünfzigern nahm er unter zahlreichen Namen für verschiedenste Labels auf. Neben dem Delta-Blues spielte er auch Varianten wie Folk-Blues. In den Siebzigern folgte ein Karrieretief, aber 1989 kam Hooker mit dem Song "The Healer" wieder zurück und genoss eine erfolgreiche Spätphase, in der er bis zu seinem Tod 2001 starbesetzte Platten wie Mr. Lucky (1991), Boom Boom (1992) oder Chill Out (1995) aufnahm.
