J Mascis wurde vor allem als Frontmann des Indie-Trios Dinosaur Jr. bekannt, wo er mit schiefer Stimme und lautstarkem Gitarrenspiel großen Einfluss auf den Alternative-Rock der Neunziger ausübte. Die 1984 gegründete Band erhielt mit Platten wie You're Living All Over Me (1987) und Bug (1988) viel Aufmerksamkeit. 1996 veröffentlichte Mascis als erste Soloplatte das Akustikalbum Martin + Me, während einer Dinosaur-Pause verfolgte er mit seiner neuen Band The Fog auf den Platten More Light (2000) und Feel So Free (2002) seine Rock-Interessen. Ab 2005 spielte er auch wieder mit Dinosaur Jr., im selben Jahr erschien sein Tribut an einen indischen Guru, J and Friends Sing and Chant for Amma. Dann folgten die Akustiksets Several Shades of Why (2011) und Tied to a Star (2014). Auf Elastic Days (2018) waren auch elektrische Sounds zu hören; die fünfte Soloplatte What Do We Do Now (2024) fiel rockiger aus als vorige Aufnahmen.
