About Iona Brown

Artist Biography

Iona Brown war nie die Art von Geigerin, die große Konzertsäle mit schillernden virtuosen Darbietungen füllt, doch ihr Einfluss auf das Musikleben in Großbritannien und darüber hinaus war beträchtlich. Brown ist wahrscheinlich die Geigerin, die am meisten für die große Popularität von Ralph Vaughan Williams’ „The Lark Ascending“ (1914) verantwortlich ist. Als Orchestergeigerin, Solistin und spätere Musikdirektorin arbeitete sie bevorzugt mit kleineren Orchestern zusammen, vor allem mit der Academy of St Martin in the Fields (ASMF), die von ihrem Gründer Neville Marriner zu Höchstleistungen geführt wurde. Die 1941 in Salisbury geborene Brown trat 1964 in die ASMF ein, 1974 stieg sie zur Direktorin auf. 1981 ging sie nach Norwegen, um das Norwegische Kammerorchester zu leiten, wo sie von König Olav V. mit dem Verdienstorden erster Klasse ausgezeichnet wurde. 1998 beendete Arthritis ihre Solokarriere, aber sie dirigierte weiter.
