Nur wenige haben mehr dazu beigetragen, das Niveau des Kammerchorgesangs zu steigern und dessen Umfang zu vergrößern als Harry Christophers – sein exzellenter Chorklang vereint Reinheit und Wärme, Licht und Schatten, Kraft und Präzision. Der 1953 geborene Sänger wurde als Knabe in der Kathedrale von Canterbury in die englische Chortradition eingeführt und vertiefte seine Erfahrungen im Chor des Magdalen College Oxford. Christophers begann seine Karriere als Tenor in der Westminster Abbey und bei den BBC Singers. Kurz vor seinem Abschluss in Oxford im Jahr 1977 wurde er eingeladen, ein Konzert mit ehemaligen Magdalen-Chorist:innen zu organisieren, von denen jeder fünf Pfund und ein Bier für seine Arbeit erhielt. Sie bildeten den Kern von The Sixteen, die im Mai 1979 ihr Debüt gaben und sich mit historisch informierten Aufnahmen von Musik wie dem Eton Choirbook aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, Oratorien von Georg Friedrich Händel und Werken von Claudio Monteverdi, Henry Purcell und Johann Sebastian Bach eine treue Anhängerschaft erspielten. Unter Christophers’ unternehmungslustiger Leitung haben The Sixteen ihr eigenes Plattenlabel gegründet und neue Werke bei James MacMillan, Roxanna Panufnik, Will Todd und vielen anderen in Auftrag gegeben. Nach seiner Ernennung zum künstlerischen Leiter der Bostoner Händel- und Haydn-Gesellschaft im Jahr 2009 brachte er seine kraftvolle Art des Chorgesangs in die Vereinigten Staaten.
