Ghostface Killah hatte bereits als Mitglied der bahnbrechenden Rapmannschaft the Wu-Tang Clan bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen, bevor er Ende des Jahres 1996 sein Debütalbum Ironman veröffentlichte. Wie auch alle anderen Mitglieder von the Wu-Tang Clan hatte der Rapper die Band als Sprungbrett für eine Solokarriere verwendet, was stark von anderen the Clan-Mitgliedern und im Besonderen dem Produzenten RZA unterstützt wurde. Ironman landete nach seinem Erscheinen auf Platz 2 der Popcharts. Supreme Clientele (2000) war ein Erfolg, aber Bulletproof Wallets verkaufte sich nicht sonderlich gut.
