Der Komponist, Arrangeur, Multiinstrumentalist und Dirigent Ferde Grofé zählte zu den bedeutendsten Pionier:innen zwischen Jazz und Kunstmusik in Amerika. Grofé wurde 1892 in eine Musikerfamilie hineingeboren und etablierte sich gleichzeitig in der Welt der populären und der klassischen Musik: In den 1910er-Jahren leitete und schrieb er für seine eigene Tanzkapelle und spielte gleichzeitig Bratsche im Los Angeles Symphony. Durch die radiotauglichen, kompositorisch ausgefeilten Stücke, die er in den 1920er-Jahren für den Bandleader und Dirigenten Paul Whiteman schrieb, wurde Grofé zu einem frühen Visionär der Big-Band-Bewegung und gab viele der Konventionen vor, die später den Jazz im weiteren Sinne definierten. Dazu gehört der Wechsel zwischen komplizierten Kompositionsabschnitten und Improvisation. Sein nachhaltigster kultureller Beitrag ist sein aufwendiges Orchesterarrangement von George Gershwins berühmten Klavierstück „Rhapsody in Blue“ aus dem Jahr 1924. Er komponierte aber auch seine eigenen Konzertband- und Orchester-Tondichtungen. Viele von ihnen basierten auf eindeutig amerikanischen Themen, darunter die „Mississippi Suite“ (1925), die „Death Valley Suite“ (1949) und die wohl bekannteste fünfsätzige „Grand Canyon Suite“ (1931). Grofé blieb bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1972 als Dirigent, Pädagoge und Komponist aktiv, schrieb Musik für Radiosendungen und Filme und übernahm hochkarätige Auftragswerke.
