Sie nennen sich selbst "Hi-Tek-Soul", doch man könnte Fat Freddy's Drop genauso gut als moderne Reggae-Band bezeichnen, die Soul und Dub mit in ihre Musik einfließen lassen. Zur Band gehören der Produzent und Bandführer Fitchie, Sänger Joe Dukie, Saxophonist Warren Maxwell, Trompeter Toby Laing, Posaunist Joe Lindsay, Gitarrist Tehimana Kerr und Keyboarder Iain Gordon. Bevor die sieben Musiker im Jahr 2005 ihr erstes Album herausgaben (Based on a True Story), waren sie im heimatlichen Neuseeland bereits ein Begriff. Gegen Ende des Jahres hatten sie jedoch in mehreren Ländern einen Eindruck hinterlassen.
