Manchmal führen kleine Zufälle zu etwas Großem: Ella Fitzgeralds Karriere nahm ihren Anfang bei einem Talentwettbewerb im Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. Ursprünglich wollte die 1917 in Newport News, Virginia geborene Sängerin dort 1934 als Tänzerin auftreten, entschied sich aber im letzten Moment dafür, doch zu singen – und gewann nach anfänglichen Startschwierigkeiten den ersten Preis. Mit „A-Tisket, A-Tasket“ erreichte sie vier Jahre später erstmals die Spitze der US-Charts. Es folgte eine über sechs Jahrzehnte andauernde Karriere, während derer sie mit Größen wie Duke Ellington, Count Basie oder Louis Armstrong zusammenarbeitete und Klassiker aus dem Great American Songbook wie „Night and Day“, „Over the Rainbow“ oder „Summertime“ sang. Im Mittelpunkt stand dabei immer ihre Stimmgewalt: Mit ihrem charakteristischen Scat, einer Art gesanglicher Verschleifung und Neuanordnung von Silben, Wörtern und Wortfetzen, machte sie jeden Song, ob Jazzstandard, Swingnummer oder Ballade, zu ihrem eigenen. Fitzgerald verkaufte rund 40 Millionen Alben und wurde mit 13 Grammys ausgezeichnet. Sie starb 1996 im Alter von 78 Jahren.
