Cypress Hill machten als erste Latino Hip-Hop-Superstars Furore, waren aber aufgrund ihrer Befürwortung von Marihuana verrufen. Ihre langsamen, rollenden Bass- und Schlagzeugloops kreierten einen neuen, bekifften Funk, der von Dr. Dres G-funk bis zu den frostigen Schichten des englischen Trip-Hop alles aufsog und den Hip-Hop der 90er außerordentlich beeinflusste. DJ Muggs entwickelte den Klang und B Real war für die Rhetorik, die sie so berühmt machte, verantwortlich. Ihre positive Einstellung zum Haschisch wurde mit der Zeit etwas albern, aber man kann nicht leugnen, dass besonders die Musik der ersten beiden Alben eine eigenartige und unheimliche Anziehungskraft ausstrahlte. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
