Die in Pennsylvania geborene Sängerin/Songwriterin Vanessa Carlton komponierte ihr erstes Klavierstück, als sie acht Jahre alt war. Ihre Debütsingle "A Thousand Miles" vom Februar 2002 schaffte es in die Charts und das dazugehörige Video lief auf MTV. Sie spielte bei Rosie O'Donnell, MTVs TRL und wurde in der Zeitschrift Rolling Stone als eine von zehn Künstlerinnen genannt, auf die man im Jahr 2002 achten sollte. Im April 2002 erschien dann ihr Debütalbum Be Not Nobody. Carltons zweite Arbeit Harmonium folgte zwei Jahre darauf. Für ihr drittes Album arbeitete Carlton mit einer ganzen Reihe Produzenten zusammen - quasi mit allen von Irv Gotti bis Linda Perry.
