Mit AWOLnation schuf sich der am 11. November 1978 in Los Angeles geborene Songwriter und Multi-Instrumentalist Aaron Bruno ein Soloprojekt, mit dem er an Songs arbeiten konnte, die nicht zu seinen Bands Home Town Hero und Under the Influence of Giants passten. Ähnlich wie Beck verknüpfte Bruno in AWOLnation Live-Instrumente mit Elektronik zu einem postmodernen Electro-Pop-Hybrid. 2010 erschien die erste EP Back from Earth, der 2011 das Debütalbum Megalithic Symphony folgte. Die darauf enthaltene Single "Sail" schaffte es bis auf Platz 17 der englischen und amerikanischen Charts und wurde mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichnet.
