Der Sänger\Texter/Komponist Antony wuchs in Kalifornien auf und fühlte sich als völliger Außenseiter, bis er das Bild von Boy George auf dem Cover des Debütalbums von the Culture Club aus dem Jahr 1982 sah. Nachdem er 1990 nach New York umgezogen war und dort eine Welt fand, die für seine Avantgarde-Gefühle und seine unbestimmte sexuelle Natur offener war, versuchte er, in der Musik Fuß zu fassen.
