Als Gitarrist James McVey 2012 eine Band gründen wollte, suchte er auf YouTube nach potentiellen Mitstreitern. Er kontaktierte zunächst Singer/Songwriter Bradley Simpson über dessen YouTube-Kanal, und nach ein paar gemeinsamen Sessions holten sich die beiden noch Schlagzeuger Tristan Evans und Bassist Connor Ball ins Boot. Die ersten Songs ihrer Pop/Rock-Gruppe The Vamps stellten die vier passenderweise ebenso auf der Video-Plattform vor und konnten sich so einen Vertrag bei Mercury Records sichern. Sie spielten Support für die ähnlich klingende Pop-Band McFly und veröffentlichten im April 2014 ihr Debütalbum Meet the Vamps. Darauf war unter anderem die schon im Oktober 2013 erschienene Single "Can We Dance" zu hören, die es bis auf Platz 2 der britischen Charts schaffte.
